Bienvenue en français 1!

It is a pleasure to introduce to you the most beautiful language in the world, French! This year, we will learn the basics of the language, spending much of our time on vocabulary acquisition. We will also learn the use of some of the most essential verbs in French and important grammar points that will serve you well in all of your years of French study. Finally, you will come to know and connect with some of the major elements of the various identities of the French-speaking world. Come to this class with an open mind and heart! Your linguistic and cultural journey is about to begin!

The materials 

  • Our textbook is Bien dit!1b. Please bring it to class every day. You can expect to bring it home most evenings as well to complete your assignments. 

  • 3-ring binder with plenty of paper 

  • 5 dividers (Homeworks, Handouts, Vocabulary, Grammar/Culture, Notes) 

  • Writing utensils   

  • A folder or some type of display book - you will be asked to keep all of your handouts, tests and assignments in this book. It will be an essential element of your cahier de vie- your year-long project to document your first year of French study. 

Homework (40% of the trimester grade)

  • You will have homework every night except on quiz days. 

  • Homework assignments will be written on the board in the classroom and posted on the class web site. 

  • If you are not sure of the assignment, please email me or one of your classmates.

  •  Homework could consist of revision of material, listening to a song or video, a writing assignment, grammar exercises or research. 

  • Not all assignments will be submitted for grading. 

  • You will be graded on each assignment that you submit. The grade scale is as follows :  a ⇃+ (corresponds to 95),⇃(85) and ⇃- (75) system.  Any effort that warrants less than a 75 will receive a number grade such as 65 or 50. For outstanding work, you will receive a ⇃++ - the equivalent of 100 in the gradebook. 

  • Your effort on these assignments will be taken into consideration as well your creative approach. 

  • ALL HOMEWORK IS DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS PERIOD ON THE DUE DATE OF THE ASSIGNMENT!!!!

  • No late homework is accepted unless with valid excuse such as illness. 

  • If you are having trouble, please let me know. I am happy to work with you to clarify expectations and help you complete your assignments in a timely manner.

  • Any assignment you do not submit will be counted as a zero in the grade book.

Course Sequence

Trimester 1​

  • Greetings, physical descriptions, personality traits, likes and dislikes, sports and leisure activities, weather, school supplies and subjects, time

  • Etre et avoir, adjective agreement, aller, futur proche, possessive adjectives, -er and -re verbs

  • Québec and Sénégal

  • Breakfast foods and drinks, place settings, café foods

  • The partitive, -ir verbs, the imperative

  • Le croissant; les crepes

Trimester 2

  • Clothing and accessories, sports equipment, leather goods, numbers 1,000 >>> 1,000,000

  • Demonstrative adjectives, interrogative adjectives, le passé composé

  • Sénégal - fashion and music

  • Chores, house and furniture

  • Pouvoir, devoir, le passé composé with etre

  • Tea ceremony

 

Trimester 3

  • Places in the city, means of transportation, at the pharmacy, bank and post office

  • Verbs : voir, savoir and connaitre, inversion

  • Writing songs, poetry

  • Medicine 

  • Travel items, at the hotel, train station and airport

  • Verb : appeler, prepositions with cities and countries, grammar review

  • Les santons

Quizzes -(vocabulary quizzes are worth 25% and grammar/culture quizzes are worth 25% of the trimester grade)

  • You will have two types of quizzes in this course : vocabulary and grammar/culture

  • You will be given the dates of upcoming quizzes at least one week prior to the quiz. 

  • For all quizzes, there will be a period of revision the day before. 

  • Review all of your class notes, homework assignments and the pertinent chapter in the textbook to adequately prepare for quizzes. 

Participation (10% of the trimester grade)

  • You control this part of your grade the most! 

  • Do you come to class on time each day?

  • Do you bring all of your materials each day?

  • Do you try hard on each activity?

  • Are you respectful of your classmates, the teacher and the classroom?

  • Do you try to speak French as much as possible? 

  • Do you add a positive attitude and vibe to the ambiance? 

  • Do you ever come to class with a new French website you have found, article or song that could benefit everyone?

  • Do you ever seek out extra ways to use French in the community such as going to screenings of French films, seeking French ingredients in foods?

  • If you do all of these things, you will earn 100% in your class participation for the trimester.

How are year end grades determined?

Trimester 1 grade - 25%

Trimester 2 grade - 25% 

Midterm Exam - 10%

Trimester 3 - 25%

End of the Year Final Exam - 15%

How are we going to do it?

  • We are going to live the language as much as possible! 

  • We will speak French every day!

  • We will expose ourselves to a variety of exercises (written, oral, group, individual, grammatical, research, creative projects, etc.) and activities (films, videos, music, food, grammar and vocabulary) to immerse ourselves as much as possible into the French-speaking world. 

French is not just work in the classroom!

  • There will be plenty of opportunities to use French outside of the classroom this year! 

  • We will have ciné nights, French lunches, guest speakers and Skype calls with French friends all to practice our French.

  • Interested in the sports? We will play Pétanque - one of France’s most fun lawn games. 

  • Love to cook and eat? We will ample opportunities to eat some of France’s most delicious recipes! 

Extra help 

  • If you have any sort of question, please come see me for extra help! 

  • I am free before and after school and during periods 3 and 5 . 

  • I also will answer your emails and telephone messages if you want to contact me that way
