Extra help constitutes asking an outside source to help you complete your assignment.
The outside source could be a person or a dictionary.

How to use extra help on a French assignment
You may use a person or a dictionary to translate WORDS or SMALL EXPRESSIONS (such as “to get up”) from English to French.
When you look up a new word, underline it, so that I know you looked it up.
At the end of the page, cite the name of the source.
This practice will help me assess your level of vocabulary and whether the assignment appropriately challenged you.

DO NOT TRANSLATE COMPLETE SENTENCES! - your assignments ask YOU to provide sentences in French, not the translators!
Frequently Asked Questions
1.Can I complete my homework with friends?
NO - unless you are working on a group or pair assignment that has been indicated by the teacher - you are expected to complete all assignments on your own.
2. Can I ask someone to re-read my work after I have completed it?
NO - but YOU should re-read it every time to catch errors.
3. Can I use a dictionary?
YES - but only to look up words. You have to underline each word you look up and cite the name of the source at the bottom of the page.
4. Can I use a translating site or have a French-speaker translate for me?
NO - NEVER! Your job is to do the translating and to grow in the language by doing it. Having a computer or a friend translate for you does not help you progress in your French learning. Only by working at it and stretching yourself will you be able to do that.
5. Can I help someone else in the class or someone who takes a different level of French with their homework?
NO, you can encourage your friend to review their notes, but you cannot provide answers for them.
6. Can I use verb conjugation sites?
YES, but if you do, you MUST cite the source and underline every verb you looked up. Most of the time, this will not be necessary as your assignments are designed to evaluate your conjugations of tenses we are studying in class. Your textbook should be your first source for verb conjugations.
7. How will group and pair assignments be evaluated?
There will be group and pair work assignments periodically throughout the year. On those assignments, the roles of each student will be clear cut (ie - each partner writes 10 lines of a skit) so that even when working together, you still will be able to maintain your individual effort. Furthermore, I will ask each student to identify which parts of the material belonged to each student, in order to evaluate you individually.
8. What should I do if I am unable to express what I want to say in French?
Come see me! I would be happy to sit with you and go over a few simple strategies to help you develop your ideas and get out of the dictionary. If there is still something you want to say in French, but you can’t find it, put an asterisk on the paper and write the expression in English. When I review the paper, I will work with you to translate your ideas.
